Every child communicates differently. We meet them where they are.
Speech and language difficulties show up in a lot of different ways. Below are the areas we evaluate and treat most often. If you don't see your child's specific concern listed, reach out! Chances are we can help or point you in the right direction.
Language delays and disorders
Your child understands more than they can say, or gets frustrated before they can get the words out. Maybe they talk around things instead of naming them, or sentences that should be there just aren't yet.
———————————————-
Receptive/expressive language, vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure
Speech sound Delays and disorders
Strangers can't understand your child, or they're still making sound errors that other kids their age grew out of. This can be articulation, a pattern of sound errors (phonology), or something more complex like apraxia.
———————————————-
Articulation, phonology, childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), intelligibility
Augmentative & alternative communication (AAC)
Your child may need an accessible mode of communication alongside or instead of spoken words. AAC is not giving up on speech. For many kids, it supports speech development! We evaluate, recommend, and train families on AAC systems.
———————————————-
Low-tech and high-tech AAC, speech-generating devices, AAC evaluations
Autism and social communication
Your child may want help with the social side of language. They may find it hard to connect during peer interactions. They may benefit from learning safety or social conventions for the world around them (while honoring who they are).
———————————————-
Social pragmatics, gestalt language processing, neurodiversity-affirming approaches
Childhood apraxia of speech
Your child knows what they want to say but can't seem to get their mouth to say it. Their speech is inconsistent, works better in some situations than others, and isn't improving the way you'd expect.
———————————————-
Motor planning, motor speech, DTTC-based intervention
Reading & language-based learning
Many children who struggle with reading often have an underlying language gap. Phonological processing, vocabulary, or oral language are areas to consider. SLPs are uniquely trained to address this. This is highly-skilled intervention.
———————————————-
Phonological awareness, structured literacy, dyslexia-informed intervention

PRIVATE-PAY PRACTICE
What Private PAY Makes Possible
Insurance-based therapy is shaped by eligibility thresholds, billing codes and session limits that have nothing to do with your child's clinical needs.
Private pay removes those limits entirely!
Your child's plan is built around their evaluation, their goals, and their pace. This also means no waitlist, or capped sessions.
A note on insurance: Even though we don't bill directly, some families are able to use out-of-network benefits, flexible spending accounts, or ask about single-case agreements to offset the cost. We recommend calling your insurance provider to ask these questions directly.
WHAT MAKES UNIVIE DIFFERENT?
We are not constrained by eligibility, group sessions or a school calendar.
Private therapy through UniVie is different in every meaningful way.
Every session is 1:1. Your child, their therapist and goals that fit them.
Assessment first, always. Before therapy, we evaluate your child comprehensively. The plan is built FOR them specifically.
Neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based care. We don't try to make your child fit a mold. We build on what they already do well and meet their profile with the right approach.
Parents are part of the process. You get guidance on what to do between sessions, because what happens outside of therapy is often where the most progress happens.
Year-round availability, including summer. Skills don't take the summer off and neither do we.
Led by a specialist, not a generalists. Every session at UniVie is led by Daj Mitchell, a licensed and ASHA-certified SLP with specialized expertise in early childhood, apraxia, autism, AAC and language-based learning.
3 steps from today to your child's first session!

Following the evaluation, a follow-up conference will be scheduled to discuss evaluation results and specific recommendations.
Step 3: bEGIN services!
If services are recommended, we build a plan, schedule sessions and get started. You will know what we are working on, why, and what you can do at home to support progress between visits.
Pediatric Speech Therapy FAQ
-
They might. School-based services are tied to educational eligibility criteria that often exclude children who are struggling but not far enough behind to qualify. When children do qualify, services are usually provided in small groups and limited to the school year. Private therapy through UniVie provides one-on-one, individualized support year-round and addresses the full communication picture, not just what affects academic performance.
-
UniVie is a private-pay practice and is not in-network with any insurance companies. We accept credit cards, cash, checks, HSA, and FSA.
-
Private speech therapy through UniVie serves children ages 3 to 13. For children under 3, our Caregiver Coaching program and Caregiver and Me classes are a great fit. You can also access the Illinois Early Intervention program, which provides services for children birth to age 3 at no cost to families.
-
In-person sessions take place in your home, your child's school, or their daycare in Springfield, Chatham, and surrounding central Illinois communities. Virtual sessions are available via a secure platform for families anywhere in Illinois.
-
Absolutely. A formal diagnosis is not required to receive private speech therapy. We evaluate based on what we observe and what you report, and we make recommendations based on your child's clinical profile, not a label.
-
It depends on the child, the nature and severity of their communication profile, and when intervention begins. Some children make significant progress in a few months of targeted therapy. Others benefit from longer-term support. After the evaluation, we give you a realistic picture of what to expect for your specific child.

You do not need to wait for a teacher, doctor, or diagnosis to seek support. If your child is difficult to understand, struggles to express themselves, gets frustrated communicating, has trouble following directions, or seems behind peers in speech or language development, an evaluation can help provide clarity. Early support often leads to better outcomes and can prevent communication challenges from becoming more frustrating over time.
